Building Creative Careers at Dalewood Middle School

Songbirds’ Partnership with Dalewood Middle School Proves the Model Works

Most schools talk about preparing students for the future. Dalewood Middle School in Chattanooga, TN is actually doing it — and in the fall of 2022, Dynamo Studios, a Songbirds brand, partnered with them to help take it further.

The partnership launched as part of Dalewood’s career clusters workforce development program and expanded Dynamo’s growing relationship with the Hamilton County Department of Education. But this wasn’t just another school placement. It was a proof point, a clear example of what’s possible when leadership, community trust, and creative education align.

How the Partnership Came Together

When band director Janet McGarrity first reached out about supporting a new program at Dalewood, we wanted to understand what we’d be walking into. So we did what we always do before a new partnership: we made calls.

The response was immediate and overwhelming. Educators, community members, and former students all pointed in the same direction. This was a school where students felt seen, where leadership created real culture, and where a creative program wouldn’t just survive, it would take off.

Songbirds brings Dynamo programs where the need is great and the support is high. At Dalewood, both were unmistakable.

What the Partnership is Delivering

Once we moved forward, Dynamo provided hands-on support from day one. We consulted on program design and development, built out Dalewood’s equipment list, and leveraged our industry relationships to help them secure significant discounts through our partners at GC Pro. The focus: music production, videography, and photography, skills with direct pathways into the creative economy.

We also assigned a dedicated Dynamo instructor to the school to support both in-school and after-school programming. This isn’t a one-time visit model. It’s an ongoing commitment, continued consultation, program expansion support, and a long-term investment in what these students can become.

Then something unexpected happened: the week Dalewood’s new program launched, Dynamo was hosting a high-level producer and songwriter camp. We brought that team straight to the school. Students showed off their work. Producers answered questions. The room was electric.

I feel like you really get to be who you want to be at this school. This is really inspiring stuff!

That’s not a feel-good moment. That’s what access to real professionals does for a student who’s starting to believe their creative instincts are worth something.

This Is What Scalable Creative Education Looks Like

The Dalewood partnership isn’t unique because it was special. It’s significant because it’s repeatable. The structure, deep vetting, dedicated instruction, curriculum aligned to workforce outcomes, and ongoing program support, is the same framework Dynamo brings to every school partnership.

What varies is the community. And what makes this work is meeting that community where it is.

If you’re an administrator, a district leader, or a funder exploring what it looks like to embed creative career education into your school’s programming, the Dalewood model is worth a conversation. Dynamo has the curriculum, the instructors, the industry relationships, and the track record to build something that lasts.

This is how careers begin to take shape. This is how we make it happen.
